My name is Dmytro Mart, and I come from a small town on the Black Sea coast in Ukraine. I don’t have a formal art education, but my mother is an artist, and she gave me a strong foundation in drawing from an early age. In 2009, at the age of 22, I became interested in tattooing because I hated my job in international logistics. Art was always closer to me, and I hoped to find myself in it. I started by practicing on friends and later got a job as an assistant in a studio, where I created sketches and learned from experienced artists. In 2015, after unsuccessful attempts to open my own studio, I was invited to Poland. There, I began participating in conventions, winning awards, and building my career. After returning to Ukraine, I opened my own studio, judged conventions, and my work started appearing in international magazines. But my dream was the USA. After receiving an artist visa, I moved to New York with my family.
My hobby is cinematography. I study lighting, composition, and editing, which helps me develop a keen eye and understand how to engage the viewer. I integrate these principles into both my tattoos and social media content. In my tattoo projects, I often use techniques inspired by great filmmakers, favor bold complementary colors, and replace deep shadowed areas with the dynamics of color negatives. This approach effectively guides the viewer’s attention. My knowledge of professional editing also allows me to create cinematic reels. While I am still searching for the perfect form of self-expression, my artistic direction and signature style are already recognizable. Perhaps that is my style.
