Marian Sagath

How did you discover your passion for tattooing, and what inspired you to make it your career?

I’ve always been drawn to art—especially drawing and painting. Growing up without the distractions of the internet and novadays technologies, I spent most of my free time creating. Tattooing came into my life naturally through friends who were getting tattoos. That’s when I met a tattoo artist who let me help with drawing designs. Over time, he taught me how to build a tattoo machine, and that hands-on experience sparked something in me. What really pulled me in was that tattooing wasn’t just another ordinary job—it was different, creative, and unique. I’ve never been one to follow the crowd, and I’ve always gravitated toward unconventional paths. Tattooing gave me the freedom to express myself through art while doing something truly one of a kind. Once I realized that, I knew this was the career for me.

How would you define your tattooing style, and what makes it unique?

My tattooing style is opaque gray slightly stylized realism/surealism. I consciously break traditional art rules to create a stronger impact on the skin. My focus is on strong contrast, rich saturation, and depth, ensuring my work stays bold over time. Rather than just replicating images, I interpret them artistically, blending realism with creative elements to make each piece unique.

Which artists or styles have influenced your work the most.

I’ve been most influenced by the early pioneers of realism tattooing—those who broke away from traditional outlines and brought a more painterly approach to skin. Artists who first pushed the boundaries of shading, depth, and contrast in tattooing showed that realism could exist without rigid borders.

What’s the most meaningful or challenging tattoo you’ve ever done, and why?

Every tattoo I do is a challenge because I constantly push myself to improve and achieve higher quality with each piece. I don’t approach my work with a “another day in office” mindset—I treat every tattoo as an opportunity to refine my technique, experiment with contrast and depth, and create something even better than before. My goal is continuous growth, so every new piece becomes my most challenging and meaningful one at that moment.

How do you handle the emotional connection between a client and their tattoo?

I approach every tattoo with respect for the client’s personal connection to it, but there has to be a balance between meaning and visual execution. At the end of the day, my name and reputation walk with them for life, so I make sure every piece meets the highest standards—both emotionally and artistically.

What is your process for designing a custom tattoo for a client?

My process starts with a consultation, where I design the tattoo together with the client using an iPad. This allows them to see how the piece will look on their body and make adjustments in real-time. On the day of the session, I finalize the design early in the morning, refining details to ensure the best possible result. This approach ensures both the client and I are fully confident in the final piece.

What’s your take on how the art of tattooing has evolved in recent years?

Tattooing has evolved massively in recent years, both artistically and technically. The industry has moved beyond traditional styles, with artists pushing the limits and innovative techniques. Advancements in equipment, pigments, and healing methods have also allowed for higher quality tattoos. Social media has played a huge role in this evolution, giving artists a platform to share their work and influence each other globally. While trends come and go, the overall standard of tattooing continues to rise, making it an exciting time to be part of the industry.

What advice would you give to someone considering their first tattoo?

Take your time choosing the right artist— stay away from “all rounder” or “I can do whatever tattooists”. Find someone whose style truly resonates with you, even if it means traveling. Be open-minded to their advice; experienced artists know what will work best in the long run. Avoid copying existing tattoos—your piece should be personal and unique. And most importantly, don’t rush the process and keep in mind… you get what you paid for.

What tools or techniques do you prefer to use, and how have your methods evolved over time?

I prefer using reliable, high-quality equipment that allow me to work with precision. This constant evolution has allowed me to improve my efficiency, enhance my designs, and create tattoos that stand the test of time.

What are your goals or future projects as a tattoo artist?

My goal is to continually reach higher levels in my work, pushing my creativity and technique further. In the future, I’d love to collaborate with other artists and brands to explore new ideas and projects. Eventually, I plan to teach other artists, doing seminars to share my knowledge and help others to elevate their skills.
